The Scottish Open 2023 is finally here! Last week’s John Deere Classic was missing most of the stars on the PGA Tour. This week at the Barbasol Championship, there is almost no one of any note playing.

That’s because the best players in the world have already made their move over to the UK. They are either prepping for The Open Championship in around Liverpool, or they are in Scotland, acclimating to the weather and links golf by playing in the Scottish Open.

Missing from this list of favorites is Jon Rahm, as he gets ready for The Open on his own and away from this star-studded field. He is one of two top-10 golfers in the world that isn’t playing at The Renaissance Club in North Berwick, located about 20 miles outside of Edinburgh.

Scottie Scheffler is here, and he is the favorite. He missed the cut at the Scottish Open last year, although he was terrific here in 2021. Looking ahead to next week, he is only the second betting favorite for The Open.

That’s because next week’s favorite is Rory McIlroy, the No. 2 betting favorite in Scotland. McIlroy has played here in two of the last three years, with only a 34th-place finish to show for it.

But he’s playing with confidence, and next week he will be playing in The Open at the same place he won in 2014. Consequently, that was the last time he won one of golf’s majors.

Xander Schauffele is an obvious third betting favorite, if not deserving of even higher. He won this tournament last year by shooting the low round of the day on both Friday and Saturday. He also has top-10 finishes at the Masters and U.S. Open this year, and he’s coming off a -14 at the Travelers Championship.

Next week at The Open, he’s tied for sixth on the betting board at +2000.

Englishman Matt Fitzpatrick is also worth your time. He started off his season of majors with a T10 at the Masters and just recently had a T17 at the U.S. Open. But why you should like him is how he has done specifically in this event.

He was T6 here last year, T2 in 2021, and T14 in 2019. He knows this course, and he excels in the bad weather that usually comes with playing in this part of the world.

Zurich Classic of New Orleans 2023 Betting Preview

The individual grind of the PGA Tour takes a break this week with a rare team event on the schedule. The Zurich Classic of New Orleans is a mixed-format team tournament with two days of best ball and two days of fourball.

It can be a little bit of a challenge to dial in on which pairs of players will mesh well together for the four days of golf, and that means that, quite often, you can find good value in the wagers that you place.

  • Collin Morikawa/Max Homa (+650)
  • Sungjae Im/Keith Mitchell (+1100)

Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay are the defending champions at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, and they carry the highest world rankings of any of the pairs. Schauffele is fifth in the world, and Cantlay is fourth. The pairing of Collin Morikawa and Max Homa is currently ranked 13th and seventh, respectively.

It is not surprising that those teams are the two favorites and are separated from the rest of the field by a significant amount.

Sungjae Im is ranked 17th in the world, and he is teaming up with 50th-ranked Keith Mitchell. Im just finished seventh at the Heritage, and he teams nicely with Mitchell.

Im is one of the better golfers around the green, while Mitchell is one of the Tour’s better drivers. Both have played at this event before, but this is the first time they have played as a team.

Sam Burns and Billy Horschel also deserve consideration at +1800. In two previous team-ups at this event, they finished second and fourth. They’ve also both won at other Pete Dye-designed courses as individuals. Burns was T15 at the Heritage last week.

Best Value Bets

Davis Riley and Nick Hardy are at +4000, and both played well at this event a year ago. They were working with different teammates then – Riley with Will Zalatoris and Hardy with Curtis Thompson – and the Riley/Zalatoris team finished fourth.

Sam Ryder and Doc Redman are probably two golfers you’ve never wagered but give them a look. They’re paying +5000 because neither has ever won on Tour, and neither player is in the top 100 of the world rankings. But, as a team, they played this event last year, and they finished third.

Ryder has a recent third-place finish at the Valero Texas Open, and Redman was 16th at the Valspar.

It’s The Open Championship, being contested for the 150th time in its storied history. It’s at the Old Course at St. Andrews, the birthplace of golf. What else do you need to know to get excited for this weekend in Scotland?

How about the return of Tiger Woods? Or a field that features former great champions, like Stewart Cink, David Duval, Ernie Els, Shane Lowry, and Phil Mickelson. In fact, a total of 18 former champions under the age of 60 are in the field, 40 of the top 50 on the World Golf Rankings are playing, and seven of the top-10 finishers from last year’s Open are here.

Rory McIlroy is the favorite as a past The Open Championship champion and someone with five top-fives in his Open career. Not only is he experienced on links golf courses, he’s coming in playing excellent golf, finishing in the top-10 in five of his last seven starts.

Xander Schauffele is the newest winner of the Scottish Open, following up his win at the Travelers. A third-straight win would be legendary, and especially with it coming at the Old Course in the Open Championship. His best finish in this event was T2 in 2018.

There is also Scottie Scheffler, the reigning Masters champion who finished T2 in the U.S. Open. Matthew Fitzpatrick is the U.S. Open champion, and he just finished T6 at the Scottish Open. Jordan Spieth won this event in 2017, was the runner-up last year, and he just finished T10 at the Scottish Open.

And let’s not overlook the defending champion at The Open Championship, Collin Morikawa, who finished fifth at the Masters this year.

Tiger Woods at St. Andrews

There is a very realistic chance that this will be the final time a competitive Tiger Woods tees it up at St. Andrews. He’s paying +6500, so just how competitive he’ll be remains to be seen. But he withdrew from the U.S. Open to protect his health for this tournament and this course. He won here in 2000 and 2005.

In the words of Woods, “I want to be able to give it at least one more run at a high level.”

He played at St. Andrews twice this weekend while other golfers played the Scottish Open, and twice he walked all 18 holes. His playing partner on Sunday, Justin Thomas, observed, “[Woods’] swing still looks as good as ever.”

The only real question about Woods at The Open Championship: will his leg hold up?

The golfing world is in Scotland for the Scottish Open 2022, before the eyes of the sports world turn to St. Andrews and the 150th edition of The Open Championship.

But before golf plays its final major of the season, the Renaissance Club hosts the Scottish Open for the fourth time in the tournament’s existence. And in the previous three outings, we have seen some very good scores come from the leaderboard, including a 22-under par from Bernd Wiesberger in 2019.

This weekend’s tournament features 14 of the top 15 players in the world, and it’s one of the few co-sanctioned events between the PGA Tour and DP World Tour, which contributes to being such a strong field just one week before The Open Championship.

As with most links courses in Scotland, the fairways are nice and wide, meaning that distance off the tee is more important than accuracy off the tee. The number one player in the world over his last 12 rounds in driving distance is Jon Rahm, who, not surprisingly, is the betting favorite here.

Getting close to the pins on approach, however, will prove to be difficult. Bunkers will be a factor, as will greens that feature a number of hills. And when it comes to strokes gained on approach, three of the top five golfers in the world over the last 12 rounds are on this Scottish Open favorites board.

Xander Schauffele is second in the world, Cameron Smith is third, and Sam Burns is fifth.

Recent U.S. Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick is also in the mix, and even though his best-ever Open finish was a T20 in 2019, the Englishman is back on his home island, and he has to be considered a top favorite.

First is Ryan Fox, paying +4000. The New Zealander currently ranks fourth in the European Tour, and he was just the runner-up last week at the Irish Open, shooting a 64 on Sunday to take home the title.

Aaron Rai at +6600 is also someone worth a closer look. He was the winner at Scottish Open in 2020 on this course, and that was when the weather conditions were less than ideal. And when it comes to strokes gained on par 4’s between 450 and 500 yards – of which there are five on this course – Rai has been the best in the world over his last 12 rounds.

Before we get into The Memorial Tournament 2022 betting preview, let’s take a look at what happened the previous week.

Another week and another tournament that needed more than 72 holes before we could name a champion. Scottie Scheffler battled his way down the stretch to force the playoff at Colonial, only to lose to Sam Burns on the first extra hole.

That exciting finish followed the exciting end to the PGA Championship, and it all sets us up for Jack Nicklaus’s tournament at The Memorial this weekend.

It’s not quite the field we had at the PGA, nor what we’ll see at the U.S. Open in a couple of weeks. But this is one of the bigger non-majors of the season, and many of the best golfers are in Ohio at Muirfield Village to tee it up.

Flashback to a year ago, and Jon Rahm is almost a certain winner as he mowed through the field through three rounds. Then he tested positive for COVID-19, and by rule, he was forced to withdraw. Patrick Cantlay went on to win at -13, while Rahm had to watch on television sporting his -18 through 54 holes.

Do you think Rahm is ready to get back after this course? You bet he is, and this is why he is one of the top bets to win The Memorial.

Rory McIlroy has yet to put together four great rounds in a row, but the flashes of the old Rory that we’ve seen over the last few weeks makes it seem like that complete tournament win is just around the corner. He has a pair of top-10s at The Memorial, but he has played better here than his final results would indicate.

In his last three tournaments, McIlroy was eighth at the PGA, fifth at the Wells Fargo Championship, and second at the Masters.

The Memorial Tournament 2022 Betting Preview

As mentioned above, Patrick Cantlay is the defending The Memorial Tournament champion here, even if his 2021 tournament win was tainted because of the forced withdrawal of Rahm. But he also won here in 2019, and he shot a -19 that year. There is no asterisk next to that victory.

Yes, he was atrocious at the PGA Championship, missing the cut at +11. But in his two tournaments before that, he was the winner in New Orleans and the runner-up at the RBC Heritage.
