NFL Week 17 Betting Picks

Two weeks are left in the season, and nine of the 14 NFL playoff spots have been claimed. Although we don’t yet know where any of those nine teams will be seeded. That, along with the five remaining playoff teams, as well as four division titles, are still to be decided.

It’s the NFL’s sprint to the end of the regular season, and these are the most fun games to wager in Week 17.

Chicago Bears at Detroit Lions (-5.5)

Detroit’s playoff chances took a hit with last weekend’s loss to the Panthers. But if they win this week and next and just get a little bit of help, they can still be a postseason team.

Back home in the dome and against the Chicago defense, the Lions should be fine. The one caveat is that Justin Fields ran for 147 yards against them in their last meeting. Just hold Fields to 100 yards, and Detroit will win this game by at least a touchdown. Give the points, enjoy Fields, and watch the Lions cover.

New York Jets (-2.5) at Seattle Seahawks

Mike White is back at quarterback for the Jets, and at least for one week, he will keep New York’s NFL season alive. The Jets’ defense will put the clamps on a struggling Geno Smith, and White will generate enough points to get the low-scoring win.

New York takes this game 23-16, and they go to Miami in Week 18, still in the NFL playoff hunt.

Minnesota Vikings at Green Bay Packers (-3)

The Packers were dead and buried, and the only thing that would cure their staleness in 2023 was the end of the Aaron Rodgers era. Not. So. Fast, says the reigning MVP.

Green Bay has an offense again, they have three straight wins, and if a couple of things fall their way, the Packers will be in the NFL playoffs. One of those things is winning this week against the Vikings at Lambeau Field – something that the Packers did exactly one year ago, 37-10.

The Vikings are a different team outside, and they will lose to Green Bay, 27-20.

Buffalo Bills at Cincinnati Bengals (+1)

The game of the week, and maybe the game of the year, is Monday night in Cincinnati. The reigning AFC champion Bengals, hosting the current top seed in the AFC, the Bills. Joe Burrow vs. Josh Allen is always great, but as the final game of Week 17, it promises to be a classic.

The Bills have been struggling to put lesser teams away, and the Bengals right now are not a lesser team. At home in front of a crazy crowd in the Jungle, Cincinnati will get the win, 27-24.

NFL Week 10 Betting Picks: Seattle Seahawks (+2.5) vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers

The Seahawks have won four straight games, they’ve won four straight against the spread, and they are in first place in the NFC West. And yet, for the eighth time this season, they are the underdog going into a game.

It’s worth noting that straight up, the Seahawks are 5-2 as underdogs this season.

Only a miracle from Tom Brady kept the Bucs from losing their fourth straight last week, and they won’t be so lucky against Seattle. We’re not going to be fooled by Tom Brady’s magic in the fourth quarter. Take the points and the Seahawks.

NFL Week 10 Betting Picks: Jacksonville Jaguars (+9.5) at Kansas City Chiefs

The Chiefs win the matchups with the Jaguars everywhere but at running back, where Travis Etienne of the Jaguars has turned into a star. But Kansas City shut down Derrick Henry in the second half of their game Sunday night, and they will contain Etienne enough to win this game.

The Chiefs, however, aren’t great at covering the spread, at just 3-5 this season, so go with the Jaguars and take the points.

NFL Week 10 Betting Picks: Los Angeles Chargers at San Francisco 49ers (-7)

The Chargers pulled off a comeback win in Atlanta, and their inability to defend the run made it such a close game. The 49ers have a much better defense and a much better running game than the Falcons, and they and new weapon Christian McCaffrey will have their way with Los Angeles’ defense.

The Chargers will struggle with the San Francisco pass rush and not keep up with the 49ers‘ offense, and they will not be able to cover the spread. Take the Niners and give the points.

NFL Week 10 Betting Picks: Washington Commanders at Philadelphia Eagles (-10.5)

Odds are the Eagles won’t go undefeated this year, but the odds are that the first blemish to their record will not come at home against Washington on Monday night. In only two of their eight wins have, Philadelphia’s opponent been within a score of the Eagles this season. There are very good reasons why the Eagles remain undefeated in 2022.

The Commanders often play in close games – their last five have been decided by four, five, two, one, and three points. But the first time they played Philadelphia, they lost by 16 and will lose by at least 11 in the rematch. Take the Eagles and give the points.

NFL Week 6 Betting Picks

Six teams are 4-1 or better, and eight others are 3-2. As the NFL passes the quarter pole and heads toward the halfway point, parity reigns supreme. Anything can happen on any given Sunday, like the highest-scoring offense in the league being shut out. Or the league’s last winless team getting a win.

Or the defending Super Bowl champions getting embarrassed for a second week in a row. The Rams’ offense is bad, and the AFC champion Bengals also lost again. And it looks more and more like two new NFL teams are going to rise to the top.

New York Jets (+7) at Green Bay Packers

For the first time since they won in NFL Week 1 of the 2018 season, the New York Jets are over .500. That’s no small feat, considering that they began the season with their starting quarterback injured and with many other key spots occupied by rookies.

But this Jets team has the ability, it has heart, and it now has a running game that can keep games close, especially against an offense that is sputtering like the Packers. The Jets getting a win at Lambeau Field is highly unlikely, but they are good enough to stay competitive and cover the touchdown spread.

Arizona Cardinals at Seattle Seahawks (Over 50.5)

In Week 1, Geno Smith was feeling out the Seattle offense, and Pete Carroll was feeling out Smith. In NFL Week 2, they were facing the 49ers, which kept the scoring low. But since that game and over the last three weeks, the Seattle offense has exploded, and the OVER has been hitting.

They cleared the over by 6.5 in Week 3, by 44.5 in Week 4, and by 26 points last week.

Seattle’s defense is not good, giving Kyler Murray a chance to have a big day, and that is why betting OVER 50.5 total points for this NFL game is one of the best bets of the day.

Dallas Cowboys at Philadelphia Eagles (-6)

Last week it was the Arizona Cardinals that covered the spread against the Eagles and held them to their lowest point total of the NFL season. And it is true that the Dallas defense is considerably better than anything the Cardinals have.

But this game is in Philadelphia, it’s under the lights, and the Linc will be rocking. That means the Eagles’ defense will get after a slower-than-normal offensive line, and Cooper Rush will suffer the first loss of his Cowboys career.

Dallas will generate very little on offense, and Jalen Hurts is just too good to struggle against the Dallas defense. Philly wins by more than a touchdown.

NFL Week 2 Betting Picks

You are forgiven if you aren’t yet fully recovered from a wild Week 1 in the NFL. With Seattle’s 1-point win over Denver on Monday, the NFL set a Week 1 record with seven games decided by three points or less.

The NFL is the most incredible reality show on earth, and this is what it has in store for us in Week 2.

Washington Commanders at Detroit Lions (-2.5)

Carson Wentz gave us the full Carson Wentz experience in Week 1, making a couple of terrible decisions and absolutely beautiful throws. It resulted in a win, but a close win against the Jaguars that would have been a loss to a better team.

In 2022 the Lions are a better team, as they showed in their near comeback against the Eagles. At home and against a quarterback who will turn the ball over, Detroit wins 24-20 and covers the spread.

Cincinnati Bengals (-7) at Dallas Cowboys

Following a game with five turnovers, Joe Burrow now plays against a team that led all of football last year in forced turnovers. But none of that will matter with Cooper Rush as the Dallas quarterback.

Burrow may throw a pick or two, but the Cowboys’ offense will be terrible, and the Bengals will win this game by at least 10 points. Look for Cincinnati to cover, but not look all that great in doing so.

Seattle Seahawks (+9.5) at San Francisco 49ers

Trey Lance is a big question mark, Elijah Mitchell is gone for the next two months, and the status of George Kittle for Week 2 is unknown. Maybe he’ll play, maybe he won’t.

Add in the confidence that Geno Smith showed on Monday night and Seattle’s big win over the Broncos, and the 9.5-point spread feels like too much value to ignore. Maybe Seattle has a letdown after such an emotional win. But maybe this team is better than people think, and they keep this NFL game close.

We believe the latter. Take Seattle and the points.

Arizona Cardinals at Las Vegas Raiders (-6)

Clean up the turnovers, and this Raiders offense can be good. They could have been good against the Chargers and even beaten them. And as we saw against the Chiefs, this Cardinals defense has some real problems.

Derek Carr isn’t going to replicate the five-touchdown day of Patrick Mahomes, but he and the Raiders will find the end zone multiple times against Arizona and win this NFL game by at least a touchdown. Bet on the Raiders to cover this spread.

NFL Week 1 Betting Picks

The NFL is back this weekend, and that means the absolute, very best sports betting is also back, with 14 games on Sunday and a 15th coming Monday night in Seattle.

New England Patriots at Miami Dolphins (-3.5)

Even with Tom Brady, the Patriots had issues playing in Miami, and now the Dolphins have one of the fastest offenses in football.

This bet is as much pro-Miami as it is anti an offense with co-offensive coordinators who have no experience ever working as offensive coordinators. The two-headed offensive monster of Matt Patricia and Joe Judge sounds like a disaster in the making, and on Sunday, the Dolphins will take full advantage.

Las Vegas Raiders (+3.5) at Los Angeles Chargers

This is the game that ended the 2021 regular season, and it was a doozy, with the overtime winner going to the playoffs (the Raiders) and the loser (the Chargers) going home.

Justin Herbert lit up the scoreboard that night, and he will do it again. But the Raiders now have Davante Adams, L.A. addition J.C. Jackson is not going to play, and with the superior Daniel Carlson as their kicker, this is going to be a field goal game.

Take Las Vegas and the points, and consider the Raiders on the moneyline too.

San Francisco 49ers (-7) at Chicago Bears

The Bears have one of the worst rosters in the NFL, and even with a quarterback that is largely an unknown, the 49ers have one of the best rosters in the NFL.

Don’t be too worried about Trey Lance. This 49ers team is going to be good, and against a team like Chicago, who is expected to get a top-five draft pick next year, the 49ers will look great. This is going to be an easy win for San Francisco, and they will cover the touchdown spread.

Denver Broncos at Seattle Seahawks (+6.5)

Seattle traded its franchise quarterback to Denver in the offseason, and just last week, the Broncos signed him to a huge contract extension that will keep him in the Mile High City for the next seven years.

No question that Russell Wilson wants to win this game more than any other on the schedule, but this Seahawks roster is better than many people are giving it credit for. The Broncos are the better team, but it will be an emotional night at home, and the Seattle defense will keep the final score to less than a touchdown.

Denver wins, but Seattle covers.

Meanwhile, on the other side, Kansas City coach Andy Reid is coming off a bye, where he’s deadly. The Chiefs are finally getting healthy after a number of weeks lost due to injury. And Patrick Mahomes has had huge games against a below-average Oakland defense.

The inclement weather expected for kickoff has lowered the over/under total line, but the Chiefs are still a great bet to score lots of points and roll to a big victory.

Cleveland Browns (-2) at Pittsburgh Steelers

It’s not often we look forward to a Browns-Steelers rematch. But following the Myles Garrett helmet-swinging incident, this game carries a little extra excitement with it. Even if the change at quarterback for Pittsburgh robs us of one the major players in that fight in the first meeting.

Devlin Hodges will be making his second career NFL start for the Steelers because, as head coach Mike Tomlin said, “He hasn’t killed us.”

Not exactly a ringing endorsement, and reason enough to still like the Browns in this one despite playing on the road and being without Garrett. Cleveland’s offense has been clicking since the addition of Kareem Hunt, and it will keep it going in this one.

Minnesota Vikings at Seattle Seahawks (-3)

Seattle has been on a roll against the spread, going 4-2 in its last six games. Russell Wilson is playing some of the best football of his career, and the Seahawks have to get this win if they want to stay in the hunt for the NFC West title.

Minnesota also has a lot to play for as it remains in the hunt for its own division title and a possible first-round bye. But the Vikings are just 1-5 against the spread in their last six games against Seattle and going on the road in primetime isn’t where Kirk Cousins thrives.

The Seahawks are on a four-game winning streak, and against the Vikings, they will make five straight and win by at least a touchdown.

The Eagles offense is a weekly struggle. They are in desperate need of good wide receivers, and Carson Wentz just seems a hair off in his play of late. While on the flip side, you’d be hard-pressed to find someone playing as well as Russell Wilson, who many list as the MVP frontrunner.

Seattle is 4-1 against the spread on the road this season and a perfect 5-0 straight up, and even as a West Coast team playing in the Eastern time zone, they are great. The Seahawks are 16-3 since 2013 when making a road trip to the East Coast.

Add it all together, and it equals take the Seahawks and the points.

Dallas Cowboys (+6.5) at New England Patriots

We have another home team with a struggling offense in the Patriots. And just like in the game above, where the Eagles are facing a quarterback having a great season, the Patriots are as well. Dak Prescott is on pace to break the single-season passing yardage record.

He’ll probably slow down against a good New England defense. But this team has a top running back in Ezekiel Elliott and Amari Cooper at wide receiver, and because of their big three, the Cowboys will keep scoring.

It’s hard to pick against the Patriots, especially at home. And they may still win. But a good Dallas offense keeps this one close.

Green Bay Packers (+3) at San Francisco Giants

The Green Bay Packers are 7-3 against the spread this year and 3-1 on the road. The 49ers are impressive 9-1 straight up, which ties them for tops in the NFL, but they are just 5-4-1 against the spread and 2-2-1 at home.

Those numbers, by themselves, aren’t dispositive. But consider how the 49ers have struggled over the last few games. They won by three points at Arizona. They lost at home to Seattle in overtime. And most recently, they played a tight one at home against the Cardinals and only covered the spread because of a fluke defensive touchdown on the game’s final play.

Meanwhile the Packers’ lone blip over the last month was the egg they laid at the Chargers. Otherwise, that offense has been humming and Aaron Rodgers has looked like, well, Aaron Rodgers.

This will be a great game, and very possibly, there will be a rematch in the playoffs. But for this week, I like the Packers and the points.
