Preakness Stakes 2022 Betting Preview

by WagerHome Blog on May 18, 2022

There will be no Triple Crown winner in 2022, as Kentucky Derby winner Rich Strike is not in the relatively small field of the Preakness. In fact, down from the 20 horses that raced at Churchill Downs, we have just nine starters for this weekend at Pimlico.

There are, however, five horses at Pimlico that also ran in Kentucky, including the runner-up to Rich Strike, Epicenter.

Post Positions and Odds to Win 2022 Preakness Stakes

  1. Simplification (6-1)
  2. Creative Minister (10-1)
  3. Fenwick (50-1)
  4. Secret Oath (9-2)
  5. Early Voting (7-2)
  6. Happy Jack (30-1)
  7. Armagnac (12-1)
  8. Epicenter (6-5)
  9. Skippylongstocking (20-1)

No surprise that Epicenter is the favorite in this race. He’s finished first or second in each of his last six races, including that second-place finish at the Kentucky Derby, and this is easily the best horse in the field.

Early Voting is next in the early odds, running at 7-2. He has two wins in three starts and was just a neck away from making it a clean sweep.

Trainer Chad Brown chose to skip the Derby in 2017, winning the Preakness with Cloud Computing. Early Voting was also held out of the Derby, and it’s entirely possible the strategy will also pay off this year.

Secret Oath is third on the board at 9-2. She beat a great field to win the Kentucky Oaks and is trained by D. Wayne Lukas, a six-time Preakness winner. Secret Oath is trying to become the seventh filly to win this race.

The fourth-place finisher at the Kentucky Derby, Simplification, is the fourth betting favorite at the Preakness. The first post is not an ideal spot for a horse that likes to close fast and strong and would prefer to save his speed for after he’s cleared the field.

Good Value Bets

In a small field like this, anyone can win. But there are a few long shots with a much better chance to pull off the upset and net you a tidy profit.

The best of the non-favorites is Creative Minister, who isn’t really a longshot at 10-1. He’s only raced three times in his career and won two of them. He was on the undercard at the Kentucky Derby and his trainer, Ken McPeek, was a winner at the Preakness two years ago.

Armagnac, as 12-1, has the next lowest odds. But if you’re looking to place a bet on a longer shot to win, it’s worth noting that twice this year Armagnac lost to Happy Jack, who is paying 30-1. Happy Jack finished 14th at the Kentucky Derby, and his sire, Oxbow, won the Preakness in 2013.

2022 Kentucky Derby Betting Preview

by WagerHome Blog on May 4, 2022

It is the most exciting two minutes in sports, and this Saturday, the Kentucky Derby will be run for the 148th time, kicking off horse racing’s Triple Crown.

So put on your fancy hat, pour yourself a mint julep, and join the 160,000 fans in attendance with the singing of “My Old Kentucky Home.” Then cheer like mad for the Kentucky Derby horse where you put your money.

2022 Kentucky Derby Betting Odds

  1. Mo Donegal (10-1)
  2. Happy Jack (30-1)
  3. Epicenter (7-2)
  4. Summer is Tomorrow (30-1)
  5. Smile Happy (20-1)
  6. Messier (8-1)
  7. Crown Pride (20-1)
  8. Charge It (20-1)
  9. Tiz the Bomb (30-1)
  10. Zandon (3-1)
  11. Pioneer of Medina (30-1)
  12. Taiba (12-1)
  13. Simplification (20-1)
  14. Barber Road (30-1)
  15. White Abarrio (10-1)
  16. Cyberknife (20-1)
  17. Classic Causeway (30-1)
  18. Tawny Port (30-1)
  19. Zozos (20-1)
  20. Ethereal Road (30-1)

Zandon is the pre-race Kentucky Derby favorite, breaking from the 10th post at 3-1 odds. Zandon is a closer who is coming off a win at the Blue Grass Stakes.

Something to note on Zandon is that he will spend the least amount of time in the starting gates since the horses are loaded 1 and 11, 2 and 12, and so on. The final two horses to be loaded in are 10 and 20.

Epicenter, at 7-2, is next among the favorites and might have even taken the top spot had he been given a more favorable post. He’s won four of his last five races, including the Louisiana Derby in March.

The only other horse with single-digit odds is the Canadian-bred Messier. In February, he won the Robert B. Lewis stakes at Santa Anita and followed that up with a Grade I second-place finish at Santa Anita in April.

Following those three horses, there are a pair of contenders at 10-1, Mo Donegal and White Abarrio. A winner of four of his last five starts, White Abarrio won the Florida Derby, the Hot Bull Stakes, and was third in last year’s Kentucky Jockey Club at Churchill Downs.

It’s also worth noting that White Abbario is in the 15th starting post, which is the same spot Authentic won from in 2020 – one of three Derby winners in the last ten years to race from 15th.

Longer Shots to Consider

It’s a wide-open field, which makes this a perfect race to bet on horses with longer odds.

Like Cyberknife, at 20-1. He dominated in a win at the Arkansas Derby and has been coming into his own these last few months.

Barber Road, paying 30-1, has finished in the money at three graded stakes races this year and appears to be on the verge of finally getting to the wire first.
