GEICO 500 Preview

From the smallest track on the circuit, NASCAR heads to the largest this week, the Talladega Superspeedway and the GEICO 500.

With only one multi-winner on the season and a track where anything can happen, we have a wide-open GEICO 500 race where the favorite has been given less than a 10 percent chance to win.

Favorites to Win GEICO 500

Ryan Blaney has finished in the top-10 in five of his last six races, and he is the betting favorite for this weekend’s GEICO 500 race. Blaney has struggled in his last three Talladega starts, finishing 15th, ninth, and 25th. But in the two races before that three-race stretch, he was a back-to-back winner.

Joey Logano has yet to win an official race in 2022, but in his last two starts, he finished second at Martinsville and third on the dirt at Bristol. In total, he has six top-10 finishes and three finishes in the top five, and it’s only a matter of time before he takes home the checkered flag.

Following Logano is a host of drivers at +1400, including current Cup standings leader Chase Elliott who is still in search of his first win. He has six top-10 finishes this season, including eighth place last week in Bristol. He was a winner at Talladega in 2019, but in two races last year, he finished 24th and 18th.

Best Value Bets

At +1700, William Byron falls just outside the top-10, but as the only two-time winner in 2022, he has to be a consideration. He was only 18th last week in Bristol, which no doubt is pushing his odds long, but he was a winner the week before at Martinsville and three weeks before that in Atlanta. An accident knocked Byron out of his last Talladega start, but in the race, before that, he finished second.

Currently seventh in the Cup standings, Martin Truex Jr. is paying +3000 this week. He wasn’t great at Bristol, finishing 21st. But Truex finished fourth at Richmond, seventh at COTA, and eighth at Atlanta, and he has seven career top-10 finishes at Talladega.

Ross Chastain is paying +3500, likely because of his history at Talladega. He has never finished higher than 12th, and four of his six starts have ended 24th or worse. But, he is having a very good 2022.

Chastain already has more top-five finishes this year than in his entire career previously, and he picked up his first-ever win at the Circuit of the Americas last month.

Zurich Classic of New Orleans Betting Preview

New Orleans is not your typical golf destination, and the Zurich Classic of New Orleans is definitely not your typical PGA event.

Golfers skew their regular individual play for a rare team event. The first member of the team is chosen based on the Tour priority rankings, and then that person chooses a partner that must be either a PGA Tour member or someone who has earned entry into the tournament through an exemption.

The teams of two compete by playing fourball in the first and third rounds and alternate shot for the second and fourth rounds. And each member of the winning team gets $1 million, 400 FedEx points, and invites to the PGA Championship and THE PLAYERS Championship.

Pretty nice incentives.

The best duo on paper is Viktor Hovland and Collin Morikawa, but this will be the first time they’ve ever played together as a team, and they really don’t complement each other. Neither is great at putting, and that could come back to bite the pre-tournament favorites.

Ryan Palmer is a wildcard, but it feels like anyone could team up with Scottie Scheffler and be in the mix on Sunday. Scheffler has won four of his last six starts, including back-to-back wins at the World Golf Championships-Dell Technologies Match Play and a little tournament called the Masters.

Marc Leishman and Cameron Smith also deserve to be mentioned among the best bets this weekend. They won Zurich Classic as a team a year ago, Smith won it with a different partner in 2017, and Smith won THE PLAYERS Championship in March and just finished T3 at Augusta.

Best Value Bets

A solid choice that is paying +3500 is the twosome of Tyrrell Hatton and Danny Willett. Willet is excellent around the green, and Hatton is superb when he’s on the green.

As complements to one another’s game, no duo might be a better fit than these two. Hatton finished top-10 at the WGC Match Play in March, and Willett was just T12 at the Masters.

Paying +4500 should have you giving Keegan Bradley and Brendan Steele a closer look. They play together all the time, and they both know each other’s strengths and weaknesses better than any team in the field. They also finished T4 at this tournament last year, just two off the lead.

2022 NBA Playoffs: Betting Odds

The 2022 NBA Playoffs are underway, as the Play-In Tournament began Tuesday night.

The Nets clinched the No. 7 seed with a win over Cleveland, and in the West, the No. 7 seed goes to Minnesota for its win over the Clippers.

As for which team will still be standing when the 2022 NBA Playoffs conclude two months from now, these are the favorites.

The Suns were paying over +1500 when the season began, and now they easily have the shortest odds of anyone in the playoffs. The No. 1 seed in the West will begin its postseason on Sunday against the team that secures the No. 8 seed.

The Bucks are paying +475 to win a second consecutive NBA title. They begin the playoffs on Sunday when the No. 6 Bulls go to Milwaukee. Giannis Antetokounmpo is paying +650 to win the MVP award. He was the Finals MVP last season.

The Nets didn’t clinch their playoff spot until Tuesday night, but they have the third shortest odds of anyone in the group. Those odds and Brooklyn’s prospects are subject to change based on the health of Ben Simmons. According to reports, he’s targeting Game 3 against the Celtics as a return to the court.

The Warriors dropped behind the Nets on the odds board when Steph Curry went down with an injured foot. He will put his foot to the test during a scrimmage on Thursday to determine his availability against the Nuggets in Game 1. The task against the Nuggets and likely repeat-MVP Nikola Jokic will be challenging, with Curry or without.

Longshots to Win 2022 NBA Playoffs

Of the teams that have secured a spot in the NBA Playoffs, the Chicago Bulls are paying the longest odds at +10000. Chicago finished as the No. 6 seed in the East and drew the defending champions in the first round. That is why their odds are so long.

The Raptors are the No. 5 seed in the East and take on the No. 4 seeded Sixers. Toronto is paying +6000 to win the NBA Championship, with Philadelphia expected to easily take care of business against the Raptors.

The Timberwolves, the newly minted No. 7 seed in the West, is also paying +6000 to win the title. They begin the 2022 NBA Playoffs at Memphis on Saturday.

2022 World Series: Early Betting Favorites

We are just a week into the Major League Baseball season, and it is not too early to look ahead to the possible 2022 World Series winners six months from now. For futures bets like these, if you haven’t placed your World Series wagers yet, what are you waiting for?

L.A. did drop their opening series at Colorado, but they are still the odds-on favorite to win the Series.

Three of the top-10 teams on the favorites list are from the American League East, headed by the Toronto Blue Jays. Vladimir Guerrero, Jr. is a triple-crown threat, an MVP favorite, and the biggest reason the World Series might go back to Canada.

Aaron Judge is another potential American League MVP, and the Yankees are always in the mix for a World Series, although it’s now been 13 years since they last won.

Following the Yankees are the two World Series teams from a year ago, the runner-up Houston Astros and the World Series champion Atlanta Braves. The loss of Freddie Freeman in Atlanta has them just fifth on the list.

The Worst World Series Odds

There are four teams in baseball paying +20000 or longer for a 2022 World Series win.

At +20000, it’s the Colorado Rockies. It was just 2018 that Colorado played a game 163 for the National League West. But Nolan Arenado left last year, Trevor Story is gone this year, and this team will struggle to win 70 games.

Battling the Rockies for fourth place in the National League West will be the Arizona Diamondbacks, paying +25000 for a World Series win.

The Baltimore Orioles tied the Diamondbacks in 2021 for the most losses in baseball at 110. If the Orioles win the World Series this year, it will pay +50000.

Also coming in at +50000 are the Pittsburgh Pirates. Pittsburgh lost 101 games last season, but they do have one of the best rookies in baseball in shortstop Oneil Cruz.

Justin Verlander is back for the Astros, and they should cruise to the American League West crown. But how will the loss of Carlos Correa affect their chances to win yet another A.L. pennant?

Toronto Blue Jays (+1000)

Vladimir Guerrero, Jr. is one of the best players in all of baseball, and he leads the Blue Jays in a tight American League East race that could see the World Series return to Canada for the first time since 1993.

New York Yankees (+1100)

A boost for the Yankees came when the city of New York dropped its vaccine mandate, which will allow all of the team to play from Opening Day onward. And this is another excellent lineup in the Bronx, and if things go right, they will push the Blue Jays for the division.

World Series Underdogs

Atlanta Braves (+1200)

The Braves are the defending World Series champions, but the reality is that Matt Olson is not an equivalent to Freddie Freeman and that change at first base will hurt.

Although the bullpen got stronger with the addition of Kenley Jansen and the Braves could surprise the league once again.

Chicago White Sox (+1200)

Not enough people are talking about the White Sox. Their rotation is one of the best in the American League, and their lineup is littered with stars like Luis Robert, Eloy Jimenez, and Jose Abreu.

World Series Longshots

Philadelphia Phillies (+3000)

Kyle Schwarber and Nick Castellanos have been added to an already great lineup, and the Phillies rotation is solid from top to bottom. If their defense doesn’t hold them back too much this MLB season, a +3000 play on the Phillies might prove to be profitable.

Detroit Tigers (+6000)

We may be one year too soon for the real jump by the Tigers, but Javier Baez is a great addition for this MLB season, and if Spencer Torkelson is as good as people think he is, it’s possible Detroit pushes this White Sox for the division title this summer instead of next.

The Masters 2022 Betting Preview

It is The Masters week, and as the tradition of golf at Augusta in early April returns, so returns the tradition of finding the golfers who are worthy of your Masters wagers.

The field is currently at 91 after J.J. Spaun won his way to Augusta by taking the Valero Texas Open. And one other not-so-small note about that 91 – it includes Tiger Woods, who has revealed that he may actually play.

Scottie Scheffler is the new No. 1 player in the world with three wins in his last five starts, but he is still looking for his first-ever win in a major. In his two previous visits to Augusta, he finished T19 and T18.

Rory McIlroy is just behind Scheffler, and the only hole in his resume is a Green Jacket from Augusta National. His best was a fourth-place finish in 2015. He was also in the top-10 in 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2020.

Best Value Bets

Will Zalatoris at +4000 deserves a look. He’s only played at Augusta once, but he was the runner-up last year. His lack of a PGA Tour win is why his number is so high.

Matt Fitzpatrick is paying +6600, which makes sense since he’s finished outside the top-20 in his last five starts here. But he did have a T7 in 2016, and why he’s really worth a look is his four top-10 finishes in five PGA starts this year.

And then there is….

Tiger Woods

Five-time Masters champion Tiger Woods is on the board at +8000, which is the same odds you can get for Tony Finau and Sergio Garcia, even though we’re not sure that Tiger will play. Although the mere fact that him playing is a possibility is a huge story.

According to Woods, he has walked the course at Augusta and the leg that was nearly lost in a serious wreck 14 months ago was able to handle the workload. Woods says that he will continue to work this week, and he will be a “game-time decision” on Thursday.

Final Four NCAA Betting Picks

If you love the traditional powers of college basketball, this is your dream Final Four.

The first coach at Kansas was the inventor of basketball, James Naismith. North Carolina plays its games in the Dean Smith Center, who played at Kansas before becoming a Hall of Fame coach in Chapel Hill.

Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski is the winningest coach in college basketball history. And at Villanova, two-time National Champion Jay Wright is also a Hall of Fame head coach.

It’s the battle of the blue bloods on the bayou.

No. 2 Villanova vs. No. 1 Kansas (-4.5)

If there is a cloud hanging over the Final Four this weekend, it’s the injury suffered by Villanova guard Justin Moore. He tore his Achilles in an Elite Eight win over Houston, and he is out. It’s a big loss for a team that primarily uses a six-man rotation.

In steps, senior Caleb Daniels, who will likely start in Moore’s place. Daniels had 12 points against Houston in the last round, and he has come up huge for the Wildcats in big games this season. He scored 20 in a two-point win over Providence to begin March and added 19 in a one-point win over St. John’s in the Big East Tournament.

Kansas has its own sixth man leading the way in Remy Martin, who was just named Midwest Region Most Outstanding Player. He scored 20 against Creighton and 23 against Providence, and he, along with Ochai Agbaji and Christian Braun, give Kansas the most talented trio of guards in the country.

However, as good as Kansas is, they are average against the spread. The Jayhawks are 19-19 overall ATS and just 2-2 in the NCAA Tournament. Villanova is 20-15-2 ATS on the season and a perfect 4-0 in the tournament.

No. 8 North Carolina vs. No. 2 Duke (-4)

Duke and North Carolina have been battling on the court for over a century, but for the first time in the rivalry’s 257-game history, they are meeting in the NCAA Tournament.

That by itself would make this a game for the ages. But for this Final Four matchup, we get the added storyline of Mike Krzyzewski, the winningest coach in the history of college basketball and in the history of the NCAA Tournament, coaching in his last of 13 career Final Fours.

As for the young men who are chasing their NCAA championship dreams, North Carolina is led by the trio of Armando Bacot, Caleb Love, and Brady Manek. For Duke, its future NBA first-round picks Paolo Banchero, Mark Williams, and AJ Griffin.

Against the spread, North Carolina is 4-0 in the NCAA Tournament and has covered in eight of its last nine. Duke has covered in three straight but failed to cover in the five games before that.

Valero Texas Open Betting Preview

The PGA Tour is in Texas for the Valero Texas Open, a final tournament before the Masters, and look for there to be plenty of late-round drama. Not all of the tickets to the Masters have been given out, and if a non-Masters invitee wins this weekend, he will suddenly have new travel plans to make.

It happened in the most dramatic fashion three years ago when Corey Conners qualified for the Valero Texas Open on the Monday before the tournament and then won it, playing the following weekend at the biggest event in American golf.

So keep an eye on the final Sunday groups and who might have added incentive and added pressure over the last few holes.

Most of the world’s best are skipping this final tune-up before the Masters, but favorite Rory McIlroy is here. He’s won the U.S. Open, The British Open, and the PGA Championship, but his best-ever finish in Augusta was fourth in 2015. He played the Valero Texas Open just once before, in 2013, and he finished second.

Jordan Spieth was the winner at the Masters in 2015, the same year that McIlroy finished fourth. The native Texan was the winner at this event in 2021. At the WGC-Dell Match Play Championship last week, Spieth finished 35th.

The aforementioned Corey Conners, a winner here in 2019, is coming off a great third-place showing at the WGC-Dell Match Play Championship. Two tournaments before that, he was 11th at the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

Best Value Bets

At +3500, you should give Chris Kirk a look. He finished T5 at the Arnold Palmer, T7 at the Honda Classic, and T14 at the Phoenix Open.

To go along with his great play over the last two months, he has three top-10 finishes at the Texas Open. A win here would net you a tidy sum and put Kirk in the Masters for the first time since 2016.

Another golfer at +3500 deserving of consideration is Gary Woodland. He had T5s at both the Arnold Palmer and Honda Classic, and last year at the Valero Texas Open, he finished with a T6.

If you’re really feeling it, Luke List is paying +5000. He’s not been good since his win at Torrey Pines two months ago, but he does have that win, and he was inside the top-20 at this tournament last year.

NCAA Men’s Sweet 16 Betting Picks

The first two rounds of the NCAA Tournament saw its share of upsets, but as the Sweet 16 tips off, there are still plenty of great basketball teams remaining in the field and great games for us to place wagers.

Thursday – March 24

No. 4 Arkansas vs. No. 1 Gonzaga (-8.5)

Yes, the top-ranked Gonzaga Bulldogs were pushed to the brink by Memphis and actually trailed at halftime before a furious second-half comeback. But they did make that comeback, and they are simply going to be too much for Arkansas.

The Razorbacks don’t have the same athleticism that Memphis does, and the going in this round is going to be easier for Gonzaga because of it. Look for the No. 1 seed to cover the spread and advance.

No. 11 Michigan (+5) vs. No. 2 Villanova

In San Antonio, four years after Villanova beat Michigan there to claim the National Championship, these two teams are back, meeting for just the fourth time in history.

Villanova got over on Michigan then, and they are likely to do it again on Thursday. But the one-time sixth-ranked Wolverines are enjoying their role as underdogs, and they will keep this game close. The Wildcats experience wins in the end but look for Michigan to play tough and cover.

Friday – March 25

No. 15 St. Peter’s (+12.5) vs. No. 3 Purdue

Would it be crazy to bet on St. Peter’s to beat Purdue outright and make it to the Elite Eight?

Yes. Yes, that would be crazy. But what isn’t crazy is to think that Cinderella, after knocking off Kentucky and Murray St., can play the Boilermakers tough.

The game is in Philadelphia, just down the road from the St. Peter’s campus, and thousands of fans who had never heard of St. Peter’s a week ago will be in the arena and pulling for the Peacocks.

Purdue is too much, and the Cinderella story ends, but it will be a good game, and St. Peter’s has an excellent chance to cover.

No. 11 Iowa State (+2.5) vs. No. 10 Miami

A year ago, Iowa State had just two wins and were completely shut out in Big 12 play. Now they have the fifth-best defense in the country, allowing just 88.5 points per 100 possessions, and they force turnovers at the fourth-best rate in the country.

Miami has three good scoring guards in Charlie Moore, Kameron McGusty, and Isaiah Wong, but the Hurricane defense is abysmal.

They give up an FG rate of 52.9%, which ranks 298th in the country. That Miami deficiency, combined with Iowa State’s great defense, will help the Cyclones cover this spread and possibly win outright.

It’s 64 of the world’s top players going head-to-head at the Austin Country Club, just 83 miles up the road from the AT&T Center in San Antonio, where a pair of Sweet 16 games will be played. And just as with all of the college basketball games this weekend, golf has its favorites, its underdogs, and its Cinderellas.

Tournament Format

Beginning on Wednesday and going through Friday, the field of 64 is split into 16 seeded groups of four golfers each. And over those three days, each player in the group will play a match against each of the other three players. One point is awarded for a match win, and a half-point is awarded for a match tie.

The top point getter in each group advances to the single-elimination round of 16, to be played Saturday morning, with the quarterfinals to be played Saturday afternoon. Sunday morning is the semifinals, and by Sunday evening, we will have a 2022 World Golf Championship champion.

Best Bets to Win

Jon Rahm is the best golfer in the world, and he’s also done well at this event. In 2018 he was the runner-up here in Austin, and in 2019 he finished fifth.

Billy Horschel is the defending champion, and last year when he won, he was paying +8000. He’s down to +2800 this year, but that’s still good value for a golfer who does well on this course and in this format.

Scottie Scheffler (+2000) was the runner-up to Horschel in 2021, so he, too, feels comfortable on this course and in this format. He also has the added feature of being the hottest golfer in the world right now. Scheffler was the winner at the Phoenix Open and Arnold Palmer Invitational and sandwiched a T7 at The Genesis between those two victories.

Sergio Garcia has never won this event, but he is terrific in match play. He’s made it to at least the round of 16 nine times at Austin, including the quarterfinals a year ago, making his +5000 payday an attractive flier.

Also at +5000 is Kevin Kisner, who just finished fourth at The PLAYERS. He also had a T3 at the Sony Open, but most importantly, he finished second at this event in 2018 and then won it in 2019.
